Alvarezs Quest For Undisputed Light Heavyweight Gold Falls Short

Canelo Alvarez dethroned by Dmitry Bivol in shocking upset

Alvarez's quest for undisputed light heavyweight gold falls short

Bivol dominates the fight from start to finish, winning by unanimous decision

LAS VEGAS, Nevada -- Dmitry Bivol pulled off one of the biggest upsets in recent boxing history on Saturday night, defeating pound-for-pound king Canelo Alvarez by unanimous decision to retain his WBA light heavyweight title.

Alvarez, who had won 16 straight fights and held titles in four weight classes, was seeking to become the undisputed light heavyweight champion. But Bivol, a 31-year-old Russian, was simply too much for him. Bivol outboxed Alvarez from start to finish, using his superior size and reach to control the distance and land the cleaner punches.

The judges scored the fight 115-113, 115-113, and 117-111, all in favor of Bivol. The loss is the second of Alvarez's career, and it is the first time he has been defeated since 2013.
